Principal Transport Planner

The opportunity

Stantec are seeking an experienced principal transport planner to join our transport planning team in our established Leeds office as we grow our presence in the North of England to serve local authority and combined authority clients.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a diverse portfolio of transport planning projects across the region and nationwide primarily in the public sector. Our team offers support, development opportunities and excellent advice. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, you will deliver a wide variety of project work and practice with a broad range of clients.

As a principal transport planner, you will support and lead the development and delivery of high‑profile transport projects including major scheme appraisals, business cases, local and regional strategies and monitoring & evaluation studies. You will deal directly with clients at all levels and work with project teams to produce high‑quality deliverables that meet client and company standards.

You will also help support business development in transport planning, mentor and manage junior staff, and have opportunities for career progression and personal development.

About you

• Highly numerate with strong report writing skills and excellent communication ability to advise internal and external stakeholders.
• Experience leading delivery of transport planning, transport appraisal and transport business cases, and developing a strong evidence base to inform transport investment decisions across a range of modes, including active travel and public transport.
• Broad understanding of current transportation trends and challenges; ability to work effectively individually or as part of a project team.
• Experience managing or mentoring junior staff and either chartered or working towards chartership with a relevant industry body (ICE, CIHT, TPS, CILT, etc.).
• Passion for developing transport solutions and delivering a first‑class service to clients.
