Salary Guide: Up to £70,000 (depending on experience) + bonus & benefits

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sole Legal Counsel to join a growing and innovative business in the Cambridge area. This role offers the chance to take full ownership of the legal function, acting as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders while supporting a dynamic, technology-driven environment. We are open to hearing from qualified lawyers (qualified Solicitors, Legal Executives, Barristers) as well as experienced non-qualified legal professionals with the right commercial and practical experience.
The Role
As Sole Legal Counsel, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the business across a broad range of legal matters. This is a hands‑on, commercially focused position where you will work closely with teams across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including supplier, distribution, NDA, licensing and services agreements
- Support internal stakeholders with contract negotiations and risk assessment
- Oversee contract lifecycle management and maintain accurate contract records
Data Privacy
- Lead on compliance across key areas including data protection (GDPR), corporate governance and regulatory requirements
- Develop and implement internal policies, procedures and compliance frameworks
- Conduct risk assessments and deliver training to the wider business
Employment Law Support
- Advise on a range of employment matters including contracts, policies and employee relations issues
- Partner with HR to ensure best practice
- Support the protection and management of IP including patents, trademarks and trade secrets
- Liaise with external advisors on filings and strategy
Corporate Governance
- Assist with board and corporate governance matters, including filings and statutory compliance
- Maintain company records and support governance best practice
Legal Advisory & Risk
- Provide pragmatic, business‑focused legal advice across the organisation
- Identify and mitigate legal and commercial risks
External Counsel Management
- Manage relationships with external law firms and ensure cost‑effective delivery of legal services
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with teams across engineering, sales, procurement, finance and HR
- Translate complex legal issues into clear, actionable advice
About You
You will be a commercially minded legal professional, either qualified or non‑qualified with a minimum of 4 years’ experience, who thrives in a standalone role and enjoys working closely with the business.
Key Requirements
- Experience in handling a broad range of commercial agreements and data protection
- Strong drafting and negotiation skills
- Ability to provide clear, practical legal advice to non‑legal stakeholders
- Comfortable operating autonomously and taking ownership of a legal function
- Experience in technology, manufacturing, or engineering environments
- Exposure to IP matters or regulatory frameworks
- Experience working with international partners or distributors
