Band 8A Principal Radiotherapy Physicist
This Band 8A post is an opportunity for a skilled, motivated Physicist. In this role, you will lead and contribute to a variety of projects and routine clinical work in Radiotherapy Physics. You will be a HCPC registered Clinical Scientist and you will be expected to work towards submission of a RPA2000 MPE certification portfolio.
Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to a variety of projects and routine clinical work in Radiotherapy Physics.
- Manage and undertake the physics service for the radiotherapy satellite at Great Western Hospital (GWH), Swindon.
- Comply with commissioning, equipment quality control, dosimetry, imaging, QA systems, and information systems requirements.
- Collaborate with external R&D partners including the University of Oxford and others.
- Support the use of a modern suite of treatment planning functionality (RapidPlan, MCO, HyperArc, Velocity, etc.).
- Develop software and scripts for automation and data analysis as part of the active computing team.
Qualifications
- HCPC registered Clinical Scientist in Radiotherapy Physics.
- Wide-ranging skills across treatment planning and treatment planning systems, equipment QC and commissioning, dosimetry, imaging, QA systems and IT systems.
- Experience with Varian linacs (Halcyon, TrueBeam), ARIA, Eclipse, HDR brachytherapy units, RapidPlan, MCO, HyperArc, Velocity, AI auto‑contouring and RadCalc.
- Ability to work towards submission of a RPA2000 MPE certification portfolio.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills for working within a multidisciplinary team and external partners.
Hospital and Service Context
The OUH Radiotherapy Centre at the Churchill Hospital is a five linac, all‑Varian site with CT‑sim, ARIA, Eclipse and HDR brachytherapy unit. Satellite centres in Swindon (two linacs and CT‑sim) and Milton Keynes (opened 2025) provide additional capacity. Supporting systems include AI auto‑contouring and RadCalc. The centre treats with a range of techniques including SRS/SRT and SABR.
