Overview
This is an exciting opportunity for an Advanced or Specialist Practitioner / Mental Capacity Act Advisor to join our supportive and friendly MCA team. This is a permanent full time post - 37 hours per week.
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret case law and changes to legal thinking in the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and in this dynamic space.
- Serve as an experienced Best Interest Assessor with advanced and up-to-date knowledge of the MCA and other relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Care Act 2014.
- Scrutinize the work of others; be legally literate, a competent proof-reader, and provide an educational and supportive role to colleagues within Dorset Council and with partner agencies.
- Provide advice by telephone and email; attend multi-agency risk management meetings, peer forums and legal meetings representing Dorset Council.
- Write and deliver training (online and face-to-face) and provide peer support and supervision to BIAs.
- Contribute to the team during a period of transformation; be flexible and willing to adapt as the role is defined through the process.
- Work in the office base at County Hall for two days per week.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Advanced knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and ability to read and interpret case law and changes in legal thinking in this space.
- Experience as a Best Interest Assessor with up-to-date knowledge of the MCA and related legislation, including the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Care Act 2014.
- A sound understanding of safeguarding; legally literate with strong proofreading skills.
- Ability to provide an educational and supportive role to colleagues within Dorset Council and with partner agencies.
- Excellent communication skills to provide advice by phone and email, and to participate in multi-agency meetings and legal forums.
- Willingness and competence to write and deliver training, and to provide peer support and supervision to BIAs.
- Flexibility to adapt during organisational transformation and readiness to work from the County Hall office two days per week.
