Job Description
We're looking for a Principal Engineer to join our Design team based in Wymondham. Our 100-strong Construction Engineering capability brings together a team of talented civil, structural and geotechnical engineers from a range of backgrounds, combining complex analysis, spatial design and an eye for the practical to deliver buildable solutions on site. We specialise in reimagining permanent designs to make them more buildable, designing temporary works and traffic management solutions, advising on the procedural management of temporary works, construction materials, ground engineering and surveying. Kier Design are a top-25 engineering consultancy, delivering a wide range of services across all sectors of the built environment, providing construction-focused, innovative and sustainable solutions.

Location: Wymondham, Norfolk Hours: 40 hours per week – some flexibility on hours available if desired, just let us know when you speak to us.
Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of complex construction engineering services and support Kier in contributing to the delivery of a broad range of services
- Agree on technical requirements, fully understand and challenge the client remit, develop fee proposals and oversee day‑to‑day workload of engineers and technical staff
- Ensure technical compliance, legal requirements and company policies – including CDM Regulations, the Kier SHE Management System (SHEMS) and the Design Quality Management System (QMS)
- Produce design deliverables (calculations, drawings, reports, risk assessments) and identify technical opportunities for value engineering
- Build relationships with client, design and site teams, act as lead representative at project and progress meetings, and support fulfilment of contractual obligations
- Manage financial and commercial aspects of the project with support of the Engineering Manager and Commercial Manager, monitor progress against programme and budget
- Provide leadership to direct and indirect reports, support the Engineering Manager and Head of Construction Engineering, implement and comply with policies, conduct staff inductions and performance reviews
- Ensure timely completion of timesheets, review timesheets and approve time off for direct reports
- Promote best practice within Kier Design, develop a culture of excellence, act as an ambassador, and ensure Kier Design is the consultant of first choice
- Recognise the social, cultural, global and environmental responsibilities of the professional engineer, stay abreast of design developments in health & safety, innovation, sustainability and diversity
- Maintain continuing professional development, improve skills in management or design specialisms, maintain membership of a professional body, and contribute to industry best practice groups
- Develop digital competency, identify current level and reach the next level, and assist in the development of all staff within Kier Design
- Maintain relationships with peers to transfer knowledge and skills, promote the engineering profession and supervise civil engineering roles, review engineering methods and software, and market Kier Design competencies to generate new or repeat business
Qualifications
- Chartered member of relevant professional institutions (e.g. CEng, MICE) and practical industry relevant experience
- Experience leading a similar role with significant relevant experience at this level
- Proven experience of designing temporary works
