Southwark CAMHS Neurodevelopmental Service
This is a fixed‑term Consultant post created as part of service changes in Southwark CAMHS. It offers a unique opportunity to join an established and dynamic team of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists within the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
The post holder will work with the Neurodevelopmental service, part of Southwark CAMHS, and join two other consultant colleagues in a team working less than full‑time.
This post includes direct clinical activity and SPAs, structured professional activities, during which the post holder will contribute to service development, clinical governance and quality improvement, in addition to completing continuous professional development and pursuing other professional activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Assessment and management of children and young people, providing psychiatric input for both routine and emergency clinical care.
- Consultation to team members and professionals from other agencies (e.g., family early help practitioners, education colleagues, etc.).
- Carry out mental health and risk assessments on children and young people, including appropriate use of the MHA, and support the MDT in managing these situations effectively.
- Assume responsibility for own case list and case management of children and families, in partnership with the MDT.
Duties of this Post Holder
- Use pharmacological interventions, as appropriate, in partnership with children, families and their networks of care.
- Supervision of junior medical staff allocated to the team (CT, ST and a specialty doctor).
- Participation in training of medical students, psychiatric trainees and multidisciplinary staff.
- Attend and chair clinical meetings as timetabled.
- Consider safeguarding issues for each case, consulting with other professionals and referring concerns to the appropriate safeguarding teams as required.
- Communicate skilfully, tactfully and sensitively with children, families and other professionals, taking account of any potential barriers to communication.
- Maintain the highest standards of clinical record‑keeping and report writing, in accordance with professional and Trust guidelines, including electronic data entry.
- Work as an autonomous professional within professional guidelines and the policies and procedures of the Trust, providing advice and guidance as appropriate to members of the MDT.
- Link with statutory and voluntary agencies and other CAMHS teams to support referral and treatment pathways and joint work.
- Maintain good relationships and clear lines of communication with other professional agencies and departments, providing specialist advice and support where appropriate.
- Maintain a high standard of verbal and written communication and provide continuity of care.
- Participate in peer and group supervision meetings.
- Adhere to agreed job plan and appraisal procedures set by the Trust.
- Maintain GMC registration, a license to practice and participate in CPD to remain in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
- Maintain Section 12 and Approved Clinician approval; if not already approved, achieve these within three months of appointment.
- Provide prospective cross‑cover for colleagues during leave periods and offer advice and/or clinical input to other CAMHS teams as needed.

Person Specification
Eligibility
- Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment.
- Evidence for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within six months of gaining CCT in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, or equivalent training (CESR issued by the GMC).
- Section 12 approved.
- Approved Clinician status or ability to achieve within three months of appointment.
Training and Experience
- Experience in outpatient/community Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
- Experience of assessing and managing complex comorbidities.
Desirable
- Training in ADI and/or ADOS.
- Training in investigation of complaints and serious incidents.
- Experience providing consultation to non‑CAMHS practitioners and multi‑agency work.
- Special interest in neurodevelopmental conditions.
- Experience/ training in forensic mental health.
- Experience of paediatric liaison and crisis care.
- Specialist training in psychopharmacology.
Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning
- Participation in audit or QI projects (A) (I).
- Experience in teaching a range of disciplines (A).
- Involvement in research projects.
- Excellent demonstrable communication skills in English (both oral and written).

Qualifications
Qualifications – Desirable
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
- Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
- Experience in other relevant specialties such as in‑patient psychiatry, psychotherapy, etc.

- Excellent child and adolescent psychiatric assessment skills.

- Evidence of skills in consultation to non‑mental‑health specialists (e.g., GPs, social workers, paediatricians).
- Evidence of a range of specialist and sub‑specialist experience relevant to the post within NHS or comparable services.
- Expertise in CBT or other therapeutic interventions to postgraduate level.
- Significant experience of developing and leading outpatient/community CAMHS psychiatric care.
- Significant experience of crisis care.
- Expertise in the use and application of the Children Act in children and young people.
