Responsibilities
- Provide information and guidance to staff in connection with the NHS Pension Scheme, the alternative National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) or other workplace pension scheme.
- Perform preparation, calculation and updating of NHS Pension, NEST or other workplace pension scheme records and payments via Electronic Staff Record (ESR) and Pensions Online (POL) in accordance with pension scheme regulations, the Pension Regulator legislation, the Trust’s Standard Financial Instructions (SFI’s), internal procedures and statutory obligations.
- Maintain knowledge and understanding of national and local terms and conditions of service in relation to pensionable pay.
- Maintain pension records for payment and deductions.
- Process all retirement benefits (age, early retirement, ill health, injury, redundancy, death).
- Process complex manual calculations when appropriate.
- Calculate Mutually Agreed Resignation Scheme (MARS) entitlement payments in accordance with the National Framework and local policies.
- Process the monthly/weekly Auto Enrolment in line with agreed procedures.
- Work independently to provide pension estimates (age, early retirement, redundancy, death in service benefits including employer costs when appropriate).
- Provide clarification and interpretation of HMRC regulations regarding pensions.
- Provide guidance and interpretation on NHS Pension Schemes regulations to employees, which may include Added Years and Early Retirement Reduction Buy Out (ERRBO).
- Investigate employee member queries in relation to their NHS pension record, including those relating to Special Class Status.
- Always maintain confidentiality and security of information.
- Provide information to the Payroll Team Leader to support and ensure the reconciliation of pension records.
- Ensure queries and requests for information received by employees, internal and external stakeholders regarding pensions are dealt with promptly and fully resolved, escalating for advice when appropriate.
- Ensure all documentation is filed in accordance with agreed procedures and available for audit purposes.
- Support the end and start of year processes and procedures as required.
- Provide support with pension presentations and awareness sessions to increase employees’ pension knowledge and understanding.
- Identify and report any areas of improvement, and provide suggestions for further consideration.
