Senior Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine – 12 Month Fixed term Contract.
We are seeking motivated and enthusiastic people to join our dedicated Critical Care team. Our team consists of 11 consultants, 24 junior doctors, and over 100 nurses and AHPs across two Critical Care units.
Units
- St Helier ICU: 13 beds, providing full level 3 and 2 care.
- Epsom HDU: 6-8 level 2 beds.
- Annual admissions: 1400 patients, including 700 emergency medical, 350 emergency surgical, and 350 patients following complex elective surgery.
We contribute to national audits (ICNARC, NELA, PQIP). Our current SMR is 0.81. Since 2020 we have been shortlisted twice for the HQIP award and have published and presented at national and international conferences.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- The post is fixed-term for 6 to 12 months in the Critical Care department (ICU and HDU), cross-site between Epsom and St Helier.
- The primary aim is to enable the post holder to recognise potentially life‑threatening situations and initiate immediate resuscitative measures; train in the appropriate use and interpretation of cardio-pulmonary monitoring.
- Training will be competency-based according to the Inter-Collegiate Board for training in Intensive Care Medicine, with continuous assessment and 360-degree appraisals.
- Regular consultant-led teaching sessions will be provided.
- The successful candidate will develop research and education skills.
- The senior clinical fellow will be supported by Consultants and will supervise junior fellows. Depending on experience and seniority, the rota will be allocated to either the senior or junior tier.
Placement and Collaboration
St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group serves a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Sites include St George’s Hospital (a major trauma centre and teaching hospital), St Helier Hospital (Renal and Transplantation Unit; Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children), and Epsom Hospital (South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre).
The two Trusts operate as a hospitals group to facilitate collaboration on research and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.
On-Call and Working Arrangements
- The post includes night on-call commitment based on a 1:8 rota, based at St Helier Hospital, covering ICU and HDU. There will be 2 junior doctors on call every night. In daytime, a minimum of 4 junior doctors are in the unit. A consultant intensivist is on-site from 08:00 to 21:00 and on-call (non-resident) afterwards. Epsom unit on-call is currently daytime only (08:00–18:00) with night cover provided by the anaesthetic team.
- The on‑call critical care junior doctor and anaesthetic junior doctor are expected to work as a team and support each other as required.
