Staff Nurse - Day Surgery Unit | Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust

An exciting opportunity has arisen and we are looking to recruit enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Staff Nurses to join our Day Stay Unit (DSU) at Broomfield Hospital and Braintree Community Hospital.

These posts will involve working with the surgical patient through the pre‑operative and post‑operative periods, undertaking a nurse‑led admission and discharge role.

DSU undertakes a surgical pathway for patients undergoing an elective procedure who are admitted, operated upon, and discharged on the same calendar day. It also supports an emergency ambulatory pathway for urgent operations that can be arranged in 12 to 24 hours.

DSU works alongside The Theatre and Admission and Day Unit (TADSU) located in the main Theatre complex, which undertakes day‑stay and inpatient pathways. There may be occasions when you will be required to work within TADSU.

These units work together to provide safe and effective care across specialties including urology, vascular, breast, general, gynaecology, maxillofacial, ENT, orthopaedic, plastic, ophthalmology and pain clinic.

Band 5 Staff Nurses will be expected to complete day‑surgery ward‑based competencies relevant to the surgical patient pathway and may have the opportunity for theatre competencies as DSU at Broomfield Hospital has its own integral theatres.

Responsibilities

• Nurse‑led admission and discharge providing holistic patient care.
• Identify and assess potential risks involved in work activities and processes for self and others.
• Contribute to the monitoring and control of the use of resources within budgetary limits.
• Work as part of a team with good communication skills, liaising with multiple departments.
• Develop supervisory skills and competence.
• Contribute to the supervision, development and training of individual staff to enable them to function effectively in their role and responsibilities in accordance with the Trust policies and standard operating procedures.
• Contribute to the collection, recording and storage of information.
• Ensure flexibility to enable the safe delivery of this service.
