The Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Principal Mechanical Engineer to play a key role in delivering high-quality engineering solutions across the Utilities and Water sectors. This is a senior position suited to an individual with strong technical expertise in mechanical design, combined with a passion for leading, mentoring, and developing engineering teams.
The successful candidate will act as both a technical authority and a leader, guiding project delivery while supporting and developing junior and intermediate engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design activities across water and utilities projects, from concept through to detailed design and commissioning
- Provide technical oversight and assurance on designs, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and best practices
- Act as a subject matter expert in mechanical systems typically used in water and utilities infrastructure (e.g., pumping systems, pipelines, treatment equipment)
- Lead, mentor, and support engineers within the team—sharing knowledge and fostering professional development
- Manage project deliverables, timelines, and resource allocation in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
- Engage with clients and stakeholders, providing technical guidance and building strong working relationships
- Contribute to bid development, technical proposals, and project planning
- Drive continuous improvement in design processes, innovation, and efficiency
Key Requirements
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
- Significant experience in mechanical design within the Utilities and/or Water sector
- Proven experience leading projects and/or engineering teams (or a strong desire to step into a leadership role)
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems design including pumps, pipework, valves, and treatment processes
- Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering environments
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations
- Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) is desirable
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor and influence others
