Job responsibilities
- Deliver general ophthalmic services across North Cumbria to a population of roughly 360,000, including referrals from parts of South West Scotland and West Northumbria.
- Develop innovative ophthalmic practice and bridge acute hospital care, community and primary care to provide a whole‑system, safe and effective eye‑care model.
- Lead or co‑lead specialty services within the team of consultant ophthalmologists to improve patient outcomes.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
- FRCOphth or equivalent
- Full GMC registration
- Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
- Inclusion on the Specialist Registrar in Ophthalmology register or within six months of inclusion on GMC specialist register
- Post‑CCT fellowship in an applicable sub‑specialty
Experience and Knowledge
- High standard of clinical skill and expertise in clinical ophthalmology.
- Clinical governance experience.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of ophthalmic problems, both emergency and elective, and in primary care.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for liaising with clinical staff for the clinical care of patients.
- Experience in high‑volume cataract surgery.
Management and Administrative
- Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the chosen sub‑specialty service.
- Ability to cover on‑call duties.
- Experience of audit management.
Teaching
- Experience and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.
- Ability to teach clinical and personal skills required for ophthalmic care.
- Experience teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates.
- Teaching of non‑medical health professionals.
- Educational qualification.
Research, Audit and Clinical Governance
- Experience and commitment to medical audit.
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research.
- Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
Communication Skills and Abilities
- Empathetic and sensitive approach to patient needs.
- Approachable and effective multidisciplinary team member with excellent interpersonal skills.
