Band 8 a Deputy Superintendent Sonographer – (plus HCAS) with additional Recruitment & Retention Premium (RRP)
The Ultrasound department consists of 16 rooms: 6 General, 6 Obstetrics, 1 EPAU, 1 ACU, 1 ACU and 1 satellite clinic. All rooms are equipped with the latest GE machines. The candidate will mainly work at the Chelsea and Westminster site, with possible coverage at West Middlesex Hospital when services require.
Scanning Requirements
- Obstetrics ultrasound – FASP and GAP knowledge and application
- Gynecology and general abdominal ultrasound – essential
- Small parts, MSK, vascular and paediatric (including GRAF hips) ultrasound skills – desirable
Responsibilities
- Assist the Ultrasound Superintendent in operational management and coordination of the General Radiology Ultrasound service under Clinical Support Services.
- Participate in effective staff management and deployment; assist with day‑to‑day operations.
- Coordinate Quality Standards accreditation and continually improve patient experience and quality of care projects, reviewing patient pathways.
- Run the ultrasound department efficiently and ensure smooth operation.
- Maintain close communication with the Ultrasound Superintendent, Services Manager, consultants and other staff to develop the ultrasound service.
- Plan and organise ultrasound rotas for sonographers, healthcare assistants and radiologists to cover all lists.
- Active involvement in training student sonographers.
- Induct new staff and carry out yearly PDRs.
- Communicate with patients and relatives in a professional and reassuring manner, especially in difficult or emotional circumstances, and deliver distressing news with empathy.
- Proactively propose QI projects, collect data and present at inter‑national conferences.
- Participate in research studies at CWHFT and Imperial College.
- Comply with, and demonstrate safe manual handling techniques and infection control measures.
- Show flexibility and adaptability with rostering requirements to ensure a robust and safe imaging service across the Trust.
- Commit to continuous professional development (CPD) and attend personal and professional development activities.
- Participate in periodic professional development review in accordance with Trust guidelines.
- Assist in the service audit and implement recommendations; ensure all local rules and protocols (including the Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme) are adhered to and updated.
- Maintain an ultrasound‑specific QA programme and audit it regularly.
- Implement Clinical Governance, maintain risk assessment and incident reporting programmes, and contribute to incident reviews.
- Deliver high‑quality service within budgetary constraints; support procurement of capital equipment and present business cases.
- Monitor supplies and consumables to keep adequate stock levels.
Qualifications
- Registered sonographer with relevant qualifications and experience in obstetrics, gynaecology and general abdominal ultrasound.
- Experience in small parts, MSK, vascular and paediatric ultrasound is desirable.
- Strong leadership, communication and organisational skills.
- Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement and professional development.
