Locum Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry
We are looking for a Locum Consultant Paediatric Dentistry to cover a 9 month maternity leave commencing in July 2026. The appointee will join our Community Dental Service to deliver level 3 paediatric dentistry care within Wakefield and District. The post is offered on an 8 PA part‑time basis and will work with an established specialist paediatric dentistry team consisting of a consultant, a specialist, specialty trainees and foundation trainees.
Main duties
- Provide high‑quality comprehensive specialist paediatric oral healthcare for patients within MYTTCDS, including those who are anxious, have behavioural management problems, or have complex medical, social, or learning/physical disabilities.
- Deliver care in clinics and domiciliary settings, driving between establishments and managing appropriate equipment for visits.
- Provide preventive care and advice to patients and their parents/carers, and occasionally deliver oral health promotion services to groups.
- Provide dental care/advice for children referred within the service.
- Participate in the exodontia list and comprehensive care general anaesthetic lists at Pinderfields Hospital as required.
- Use inhalation sedation where appropriate.
- Advise and support the clinical team and peers in clinical and leadership situations, inspiring confidence and teamwork.
- Guide parents, carers and teachers on dental input required for multidisciplinary care plans for children with special needs.
- Provide advice and emergency care to all priority groups of patients within MYTTCDS.
- Train, supervise and clinically teach foundation/core dental trainees and specialty paediatric dental trainees.
- Collaborate with health professionals and other agencies to raise awareness of children’s oral health needs and to be involved in training.
- Support the current leader on clinical audit/peer review programmes within the service.
- Attend service dental clinics, other establishments, staff meetings, and training as required.
Qualifications and experience
- Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC) on the Specialist List for Paediatric Dentistry.
- BDS/BChD or equivalent membership or fellowship in Paediatric Dentistry, or equivalent.
- Eligibility to work in the UK Dental Performers List inclusion.
- Understand the functions of Community Dental Services and have up‑to‑date knowledge, skills and attitudes to paediatric and adult special care dentistry in the UK.
- Demonstrate an intelligent and analytical approach to problem‑solving with good time‑management skills.
- Evidence of management and leadership training or experience if lacking post‑CCST/ISFE qualifications. (For details refer to the attached full person specification.)
