Role Summary
The Manufacturing Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the site’s manufacturing engineering capability to ensure safe, efficient, and scalable production across assembly and fabrication operations.
Full Accountability For
- The Manufacturing Engineering team
- NPI (New Product Introduction) process ownership
- Manufacturing data, BOMs, and routing integrity
- Delivery of continuous improvement initiatives that improve quality, cost, delivery, safety, and productivity
About The Role
This is a leadership role combining technical ownership, people management, and operational improvement delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Manufacturing Engineering Leadership
- Line management of Manufacturing Engineers
- Set clear objectives, priorities, and accountability for the team
- Develop engineering capability through coaching, training, and mentoring
- Ensure engineering support enables stable and efficient production
- Act as the technical authority for assembly and fabrication processes
- New Product Introduction (NPI)
- Own and lead the NPI process for the site for prototype builds and production readiness launch.
- Ensure effective transfer from design to manufacture
- Define and validate:
- Manufacturing BOMs
- Routings
- Work instructions
- Process flows
- Tooling, jigs, and fixtures
- Lead cross‑functional NPI reviews with Design, Quality, Operations, and Supply Chain
- Ensure products are manufacturable, cost‑effective, and capable of repeatable production
- Drive right‑first‑time introduction into production
- Manufacturing Data & Planning Ownership
- Own the integrity of manufacturing data, including:
- Manufacturing BOMs
- Routings
- Standard times
- Capacity data
- Ensure alignment between design engineering, planning, and ERP systems
- Manage the team responsible for manufacturing data and planning inputs
- Support planning accuracy, lead‑time definition, capacity and forecasting modelling
- Drive continuous improvement in data accuracy and governance
- Continuous Improvement & Process Excellence
- Lead and deliver continuous improvement projects across the business.
- Identify and remove waste, variation, and inefficiency
- Apply Lean and CI tools (standard work, value stream mapping, problem solving)
- Ensure improvements are engineered into processes and sustained
- Support cost‑reduction and efficiency improvement initiatives for machine build hours.
- Assembly & Fabrication Process Ownership
- Own and maintain manufacturing processes in assembly and fabrication areas
- Define and control standard processes and best practice
- Support introduction of new equipment, automation, or process changes
- Ensure processes meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
- Act as the interface between Operations and Engineering for process changes
- Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with cross functional teams
- Support operational issue resolution with robust engineering solutions
- Participate in site leadership forums and improvement planning
- Communicate clearly across functions to align priorities and execution
- Health, Safety & Quality
- Ensure engineering solutions and processes are safe by design
- Support risk assessments, SOPs, and safe systems of work
- Drive quality improvements through process design and control
- Support audits and compliance requirements as required
Key Performance Measures
- Successful and timely NPI launches
- Manufacturing BOM and routing accuracy
- Improvement in productivity, quality, and delivery metrics through hours reduction.
- Reduction in scrap, rework, and inefficiency
- Engineering team performance and development
- Effectiveness and sustainability of improvement initiatives
Required Criteria
- Proven experience in manufacturing engineering management
- Strong background in assembly and fabrication environments
- Experience leading NPI / industrialisation activities
- Demonstrated success delivering continuous improvement projects
- Strong people management and leadership capability
- Experience owning or managing manufacturing BOMs and routings
- Strong problem solving and data driven decision-making skills
Desired Criteria
- Lean / CI training (Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen)
- Experience with ERP/MES systems
- Background in heavy engineering, capital equipment, or machinery manufacture
- Exposure to high mix, low to medium volume production
- Educated to degree level in engineering
