Senior Fellow in Neuro ICU (Airway)

Location: University Hospital Southampton, Wessex Neurological Intensive Care Unit
Responsibilities
- Step up into a senior leadership role, lead daily ward rounds on the Neuro ICU and participate in senior decision making in the role of "acting up Consultant".
- Staff the Resident Airway Fellow rota in and out of hours on the Neuro Intensive Care Unit.
- Carry out training and practical procedures relevant to Neuro Intensive Care, including central venous cannulations, transfer medicine, bedside ECHO and lung ultrasound.
- Handle specific training and monitoring of Neuro ICU procedures: external ventricular drains, cerebrospinal fluid sampling, lumbar puncture and management of lumbar drains, intracranial pressure monitoring, parenchymal brain tissue oxygenation monitoring, and participation in brain‑stem death testing procedures with liaison to specialist organ donation teams.
- Actively participate in Unit and Departmental teaching in critical care, neuro‑anaesthesia, neurosurgery, acute neurology, general medicine and infectious diseases relevant to the neuro‑critical care patient.
- Engage in research activities in neurology, neuro‑anaesthesia, neurosurgery and neuro‑intensive care with an aim of presenting at local, national and international meetings.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Prior recent experience working in anaesthesia and critical care within a UK NHS Trust.
- Successful attainment of minimal anaesthesia "airway" competence, evidenced by full completion of the "Initial Assessment of Anaesthetic Competence (IAC)" certificate or equivalent.
- Proficiency at arterial line insertion and central venous cannulation, independent ability and interest in teaching these skills to juniors.
- Proficiency at intra‑ (and, where possible, inter‑) hospital transfer of Level 3 patients.
- Interest in the speciality and knowledge of common neurological emergencies and relevant critical care syndromes.
- A desire to gain more experience in caring for the neurologically injured critical care patient, with ongoing training aimed at attainment of either CCT or CESR in either Intensive Care or Anaesthesia.
- Minimum of 6 years of specialty training and holding relevant higher‑specialty exams (FRCP, FRCA, FRCS).

Contractual Information
