Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
- Review patients referred for CAR‑T cell therapy in outpatient and inpatient settings.
- Liaise with referring teams, CAR‑T consultants and coordination team for apheresis, bridging, infusion, discharge and post‑CAR‑T follow‑up.
- Manage patients undergoing CAR‑T cell therapy in the inpatient and ambulatory settings, in collaboration with subspecialty teams and supervising CAR‑T consultants.
- Refer patients to other specialty teams (e.g. intensive care, neurology, cardiology) as required.
- Discuss cases at the Southampton lymphoma and leukaemia/myeloma MDTs, and the CAR‑T MDT.
- Take an active role in developing and expanding the CAR‑T service within the WBMT&CT programme, collaborating with CAR‑T leads.
- Recruit and manage patients within CAR‑T clinical trials.
- Collaborate with colleagues regionally through MDT and network‑wide working.
- Develop regional CAR‑T referral pathways in partnership with CAR‑T lead consultants.
- Participate in clinical governance activities including morbidity and mortality meetings and committees.
- Contribute to the audit activities of the WBMT&CT programme and wider haematology department; analyse local data and prepare publications for the National CAR‑T Clinical Panel.
- Undertake haematology procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, intrathecal chemotherapy and tunnelled central catheter removal, with appropriate training and supervision.
- Engage with the education programme, attend educational meetings, maintain an educational portfolio and participate in the trust’s appraisal system.
- Provide cross‑cover to other haematology specialty teams during planned and unplanned absences.
Person Specification
Qualifications, Training & Experience – Essential Criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- GMC registration with a licence to practise.
- MRCP Part 1 or higher specialty membership exam (or equivalent).
- MRCP Part 2 or higher specialty membership exam (or equivalent).
- Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement.
- Internal Medicine experience for at least 12 months or Clinical Haematology experience for at least 6 months.
- Experience of out‑of‑hours and emergency care.
Qualifications, Training & Experience – Desirable Criteria
- MRCP PACES.
- Higher degree.
- Experience working as a doctor in the NHS.
- Internal medicine experience for at least 24 months.
- Clinical haematology experience for at least 12 months.
- Quality improvement or education project completion.
- Publications related to haematology.
- Presentations and/or teaching related to haematology.
- Experience of stem cell transplantation and cellular therapies.

- Evidence of effective teamwork and communication with patients and colleagues.
- Understanding of equality, diversity and how it impacts patients, visitors and staff.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

- Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Ability to work with indirect supervision in inpatient and outpatient haematology settings.
- Understanding of treatment principles for cancer and haematology patients.
